This is the fourth blog post on the concept of Emotional Intelligence. Daniel Goleman has studied, researched and written exhaustively on Emotional Intelligence. In my current graduate class I am reading some of his material as it relates to leaders and how they handle organizational change.
Emotional Intelligence is defined by Goleman as "the ability to manage ourselves and our relationships effectively - consists of four fundamental capabilities: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social skill. Each capability, in turn, is composed of specific sets of competencies."
Social Skill
"Visionary Leadership: the ability to take charge and inspire with a compelling vision."
"Influence: the ability to wield a range of persuasive tactics."
"Developing others: the propensity to bolster the abilities of others through feedback and guidance."
"Communication: skill at listening and at sending clear, convincing, and well-tuned messages."
"Change catalyst: proficiency in initiating new ideas and leading people in a new direction."
"Conflict management: the ability to de-escalate disagreements and orchestrate resolutions."
"Building bonds: proficiency at cultivating and maintaining a web of relationships."
"Teamwork and collaboration: competence at promoting cooperation and building teams."
The most challenging component of leadership on every front is working with people. Jesus spent so much of his ministry challenging his listeners in the basics of Godly human interaction. The struggle to live under the power and energy of God as we relate to others is where the rubber meets the road. Allowing ourselves to live in a different mindset and perspective is entirely possible, but only by remembering what God has to put up with every moment as he deals with us.
Emotional intelligence is not a Daniel Goleman concept. All of the above components are the results of a Spirit led life. And when the list above does not happen, it is because I have forgotten who I live for and belong to. And when I do practice these competencies, I am able to glorify God.
Which of the above components do you have the greatest difficulty with and which one is easiest for you?
