1. My father was a minister and so was up early preparing his heart and mind for the message he was going to give.
2. When we lived in Newport, R.I., he would let me ride with him to the Navy base to pick up the Sailors and Officers for church. We'd drive down on the dock and pull up next to the ships.
3. When we woke up, Mom was playing an album on the stereo of Hymns to help us prepare our minds for worship.
4. Sunday we dress up day...ties and usually sport coats all through High School. Shoes had to be shined.
5. Lunch was prepared and in the oven before we left for services, so the Navy boys could join us for the afternoon.
6. Attendance was never very large. In Maine, we might have 11. In Rhode Island, we could have 75. In Ohio we had about 200.
7. Singing was a blast and I learned harmony by hearing sailors sing.
8. Mom and my brother had amazing musical voices.
9. After services, it was play time. Eating crab apples. Climbing trees. Playing tag. Throwing snow balls. We were always the last ones to leave the building.
10. I learned to love God by watching others and hearing my dad preach.
What are your Sunday memories as you grew up?
